Why grooves
A dotted line can be traced the wrong way.
Most handwriting workbooks print a letter and a dotted copy underneath. A child forming letters wrong will trace that dotted line wrong too — starting at the bottom, going clockwise where it should go anticlockwise.
It looks fine on the page and the habit sets anyway. A groove doesn't allow it.
